Inside The Doukhobor Faith

June 2 - August 31

Doukhobors in Agassiz

In this thought provoking exhibit, we learn the history, persecution, and stories of the Doukhobor people. In the 100th year anniversary of Doukhobor leader Peter (Lordly) Vergin’s death on October 29th, 1924, we are taken back through time to come to an understanding of the Doukhobor culture and its roots.

What is their connection to Agassiz? Though most Doukhobors have returned to the Kootenays, a handful remain in or have returned to Agassiz, including Helen Freeman, who poignantly recounts her childhood and her time in a “residential dormitory” in New Denver in her book Girl #85: A Doukhobor Childhood.
