Mrs. Bartel's China (on loan from Waltraut Bartel)
Follow the extraordinary story of Waltraut Bartel and her family's china. Living in Poland during WWII Waltraut was forced to flee her home, but not before she was able to secure her family's priceless 1883 china. The heirlooms were buried underneath the woodshed, not to be unearthed for nearly forty years, when Waltraut revisted her home town in 1984. With much hard work and determination the china was returned to its rightful owner, who has been kind enough to share this story and the china with her family, friends, and with our museum and visitors.
A Heritage of Hops - Community Memories Online Exhibit
For 60 years hops, a basic ingrediant in beer, were the main industry in the Agassiz Area of British Columbia. At the height of the business, 300 acres of a total holding of 450 acres were planted with hops. In 1948 the hop fields were desimated by flood water and the yards sold four years later.
The first hop yards, planted in 1892, belonged to the B.C. Hop Company and were managed by Supt. George Hammersly, Capt. W.E. Green, and Messre, Sitch, and Lane....

Stationmaster's Office & CPR Caboose
Step inside our 1949 steel CPR caboose and learn what it was like to live and work on a train in these times. Then when you are finished, enter the museum and see the stationmaster's office. Set up just as if it were still an operating station, see the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Agassiz through the eyes of the many stationmasters that have been posted here over the years. The office contains everything from signal lamps to CPR communication devices and even the story of Billy Miner, a train robber and master criminal, who was known to frequent the Agassiz area. You will soon find yourself an expert on all things CPR after this experience.
Harrison Hot Springs Display
The story of the now world renowned resort town of Harrison Hot Springs told from its very beginning with photographs and artifacts. Learn about the famed Harrison Hot Springs Resort Hotel from it's late 1800's beginning as the St. Alice Hotel. Also, see the industry on which the town was once based with the Greenpoint logging and Rivtow displays.
Dr. McCaffrey Collection
As the only doctor in the Agassiz area for a number of years, Dr. Peter McCaffrey was faced with a challenging task. See his story through his many belongings that are on display. With doctor's tools, dolls, bed pans, and even a full medical table his collection of artifacts is certainly the largest that we have at the museum. Also, see the hand-propelled CPR velocipede (circa 1914) that was used by the doctor to travel to patients in Harrison Mills and Ruby Creek.
The Lifestyle Gallery: Kitchen, Nursery, and Parlour Displays
Experience life in pioneer times through the many objects that were once part of everyday life. In the kitchen you will find everything from an old stove, to an ice cream maker, and even a coffee grinder. Then move to the nursury where you will see the children's toys and dolls that once brought enjoyment to the children of the town. Finally, move to the parlour where you will see old radios, record players, and a number of ladies' dresses, all displayed around the centrepiece of the Agassiz family piano.
Agassiz's Chinatown: A Look Through the Eyes of the Fong Family
Learn about the hardships faced by Chinese immigrants and CPR workers through the eyes of Agassiz's first Chinese pioneer family. As a labour agent for the CPR, Mr. Fong was in charge of bringing men from China to work on the railroad. He was also tasked with finding them shelter, and so they began to stay in the upper floor of his Agassiz general store. With sometimes more than 100 men living in the same room at a time, the store soon became known as Agassiz's Chinatown. Sadly, this story is plagued with death and hardship, as these men were tasked with one of the most dangerous jobs our history has ever seen. It is, however, a story that needs to be told.
Norman Morrow: Champion Plowman
Experience the story of our very own home-grown champion. As a plowman, Norman Morrow and his team of Clydesdales competed and won quite frequently, leaving us with a plethora of trophies and crests to display for your viewing pleasure. Also, see his decorative heavy horse tack and the very plow which he used to win such competitions.
Port Douglas Display
At the end of Harrison Lake lies a small First Nations village called Port Douglas. Experience the history of this community and the native culture in general through a display of baskets, art, and photographs that chronicle the experiences of these people over the years.
Military Display
Experience the wars through the eyes of the Agassiz men that served in them. On display are uniforms, photographs, medals, and even a letter from King George V himself (written to Frank Appel, a prisoner of war during WWI). Also, see a plaque from the HCMS Agassiz, a flower class corvette that was named for our little town.
